Sedgwick County 4-H Market Livestock

The Project

In Sedgwick County our market livestock projects include: beef, goats, sheep, and swine. These livestock projects are a unique opportunity to combine animals and education to enhance youth development. Youth participate in a variety of activities including judging, quiz bowl, communication, expressive arts, and other livestock-oriented contests to demonstrate 4-Hers knowledge and skills acquired by working with livestock. The livestock projects builds character, creates discipline, teaches youth about agriculture, teaches sportsmanship, and so much more. 4-Hers learn about agriculture and the livestock industry. Not only do 4-Hers learn about livestock these projects also allow 4-H’ers the opportunity to gain confidence in themselves by caring for something that is 100% dependent on them. The experience of children owning and working with animals; being responsible for their care, health, and growth; and exhibiting them in a competitive environment is a tremendous character-building process.

4-H Livestock Sale

The Sale

The livestock sale is where 4-H members sell the animals they have just shown in competition. In Sedgwick County the person who wins the bid has two options: Floor the animal which is where the buyer only pays the premium and lets the locker pay the floor price. The other option is for the buyer to keep the meat for themselves and chose the locker the animal is sent to - The buyer then pays the premium and the floor price. All of the money bid goes back to the 4-Her. The 4-Her then uses that money to pay expenses such feed bills and vet care, purchase and raise another livestock project for the next year. Many 4-Hers have put themselves through college, started livestock businesses, bought cars/trucks, etc.. with the money they have received by participating in the livestock sales.

After the lot closes, an automatic notification is sent if the preference is checked in your account. Sedgwick County 4-H Committee will need to know the following ASAP...

  • FLOOR: Buyer only pays the WINNING BID and lets the locker keep the meat
  • BUY/SLAUGHTER (which locker?) - Buyer pays the WINNING BID & FLOOR PRICE ($/lb). Buyer keeps the meat for themselves and choses which locker the animal is sent to. The following choices are available. STROOT'S GODDARD or STROOT'S MULVANE.
